She was born in Moscow, Russia. She was a girl who never dreamed of becoming a model. But everything began after a friend and photographer, Igor Vishnyakov, took photos of her. He knew she had something special, so he then gave them to IMG and her career took off. Before this, she was studying art history at Russian University for the Humanities
Soon after she signed with IMG in 2005, she walked for Prada. After that, she did the campaign for Prada. She made "fashion history" by being the face of Prada for 6 consecutive seasons and was the first model to do so. As of 2008, she has appeared in over 9 Prada ads. She is ranked 2nd on the Top 50 Models Women list by models.com, sharing the spot with fellow top fashion model, Isabeli Fontana.
In the May 2007 issue of American Vogue she was featured on the cover with fellow models Doutzen Kroes, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Jessica Stam, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson as the new crop of supermodels. In her interview, she talked about her love for art and reading. Her current project was reading the book War and Peace. Recently, in August and September of 2007, she was on another two covers of Vogue. Russian Vogue and British Vogue, back to back. Recently Sasha has appeared in the 2008 Pirelli calendar and in the May 2008 issue of Australian Vogue.
Pivovarova's three-year campaign contract with Prada expired after the Spring/Summer 2008 campaign season. Pivovarova was noticeably absent from the runway shows (including Prada) during the Fall/Winter 08 runway season due to illness, appearing in only one show during New York Fashion Week. However, she returned to the runways on the final day of Paris Fashion Week to close the Miu Miu runway show as an exclusive.
When asked what her favorite part of the job is, she said the photo shoots and traveling. She told CNN in an interview, that she gets to meet people and see places that she would never be able to meet or see, if it had not been for modeling. She is known for her horse-like walk, muscular body, small pupils and dark undereyes, and feline like features. Also her height, natural appearance, and goofy/fun personality backstage and serious personality on the runway.

Personal life and Sasha, the artist
Before she was a model, she was an art student in Moscow. Her current home in Brooklyn, New York doubles as an art studio (in a recent issue of American Vogue magazine, they photographed Sasha's Brooklyn loft). Pivovorova said in a Teen Vogue interview, "I was playing with pencils while the other girls were playing with dolls." In her free time, Sasha loves to paint and draw. Her paintings were shown in a gallery in Paris. French Vogue also published some of Sasha's works. She often is seen with stencils, paints, and other art tools in her bag and is usually photographed backstage drawing something. She said in an interview with CNN, that she uses anything as a canvas; hotel papers, casting and that days itinerary papers, and anything she can find basically. Recently, Sasha was married to fiance and long-time friend, the photographer Igor Vishnyakov. He calls Sasha his "best friend" and said in an interview that "she still is the same shy person, as when I first met her". On May 7, 2008 Sasha attended the very exclusive Costume Institute Gala, which was held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
"I think female models have more of a future than men do. They [female models] are always changing and growing. I don't like to think about who has money and who doesn't .. as long as you are happy with what you are doing." (One thousand models.)
